Crime Prevention

Burglary

By following the advice on the check list below you can greatly reduce your risk of becoming a victim of burglary:

  • Check all windows and doors are locked, even if you’re only popping out for a few minutes.
  • All outside doors have mortice deadlocks fitted to BS 3621, or are securely bolted from the inside.
  • Don’t leave keys in hidden places outside the house.
  • Do not leave keys on view within the property; keep them hidden away in a draw.
  • Make sure all accessible windows are fitted with key operated locks.
  • Leave a light on with the curtains drawn if you’re going out after dark.
  • Have external lighting fitted. ‘Dusk to dawn’ lights are preferred which will automatically turn on when it gets dark.
  • Try to ensure the rear of your property is secure with a minimum of 1.8m walls or fencing and keep back gates locked. Trellis topping can make it difficult to climb.
  • Keep your shed locked; thieves sometimes use your own tools to break into your home.
  • Security mark your valuable possessions with a UV pen using your postcode and house number. You can also register your valuables on the www.immobilise.com website, which is supported by the Home Office and all UK police forces.
  • Police also encourage use of a property inventory which can be downloaded from the following link: IdentifablePropertyInventory.doc. Keep completed forms a safe place.
  • Don’t leave large amounts of cash in the house.
  • Do not leave valuables near open doors / windows.

How can you avoid distraction burglary?

There are some useful tips that can be used to reduce the risk of becoming a victim. Keep your doors locked at all times, even if you are at home. Thieves sometimes work in pairs and one will come in the rear door while the other distracts you at the front.

If someone calls at your door, look through a window or spy hole to check who it is. Don’t let any one in unless you’re absolutely sure who they are.

Always answer the door on a chain (always keep the chain off at other times when you are at home in case you need to get out quickly).

Check they have a photo ID card. If you are still in doubt, call the company using the number from your directory, to verify that they are who they say they are. (Do not use a number on their card). If they don’t have a valid photo ID don’t let them in.

Remember: - IF IN DOUBT, KEEP THEM OUT.
